Engineers’
Day on the Hill on March 6
–
Does allowing contractors to
modify plans and specs to “improve energy consumption” in state buildings
concern you? It should! Engineers certainly recognize the need to save energy
costs, but changing energy systems could significantly impact other aspects of
the design.
The continuation
of the State Architects’ and Engineers’ Board is also on the agenda for
Engineers’ Day on the Hill. Another issue facing us is legislation that would
change the composition of the Solid Waste Disposal Control Board, Water Quality
Control Board, and Air Pollution Control Board by reconstituting the
boards and permitting only “public members” to serve.
These are
only a few examples of the wide variety of issues to address which affect public
health and safety.
Register by completing
the form or sending
Candy Toler
an email with the
names of your State Senator and Representative and please tell her if you will
be staying for lunch on March 6. If you are unsure about who your legislators
are, go to:
Tennessee
General Assembly Main
Page and fill in
your address in the lower right hand corner and click search. Judy Logue has
reserved a block of rooms at a reduced rate at the
Sheraton Nashville Downtown in the name of Tennessee Society
of Professional Engineers..
Call

Parking will be discounted for those attending
the E-Day luncheon.
Support your
profession by participating in Engineers’ Day this year.

Civil and Mechanical PE
Exam Review Course – Live Webinar -
The Tennessee
Society (TSPE) is cooperating with the Minnesota Society (MSPE) to offer Civil
and Mechanical PE Exam Review Classes via live webinars. Members of TSPE
may register at the member rate and participate at their own offices or homes if
they prefer not to attend the live Civil PE exam review in Nashville.
Civil PE Exam Review
-
Topics covered include concrete, construction, engineering economics (brief
review), fluid mechanics, highway engineering, hydrology, mechanics of materials
and IBC loads, open channel flow, soils and foundations, timber/steel design,
waste facilities engineering. This class does not cover seismic or land
surveying.
To Register for the Civil review,

is Feb 1, 2012.
Mechanical PE Exam Review
-
Topics covered include combustion, dynamics,
engineering economics (brief overview) fans/ducts and compressible flow, fluids
and hydraulic machines (two sessions), heat transfer, HVAC, machine design (two
sessions), mechanics of materials and failure theory, power cycles, statics and
mechanics of materials, and thermodynamics. Download a mechanical PE review

Engineers' Week -February
19-25, 2012
Engineering Day at ASC
-
Saturday, February 18,
2012 In
celebration of the partnership with the Engineering community, Adventure Science
Center will host its tenth annual Engineering Day on . Engineers have the
opportunity to showcase demonstrations and activities which interest and inspire
young people to learn about the important role engineering plays in our daily
lives and possibly consider it as a future career.
We
invite you to participate by creating a display and staffing it with
volunteers. Through hands-on activities and handouts, you can explain who
engineers are, what engineers do and how engineering is a part of everyday
life. Great web sites for activity ideas include:
www.eweek.org and
www.teachengineering.org
In
preparation for the upcoming spring severe weather season and in recognition of
the 200th anniversary of Tennessee’s three major earthquakes in the
New Madrid Seismic Zone, we are including activities that highlight engineering
techniques used to reduce the damage caused by natural disasters. We encourage
you to consider incorporating this theme into your activity, if possible.
If your
company is interested in participating in Engineering Day at Adventure Science
Center, please contact
Larry Dunlap-Berg for more information
(615.401.5059).
E Week
is a formal coalition of more than 70 engineering, education, and
cultural societies, and more than 50 corporations and government agencies.
Dedicated to raising public awareness of engineers' positive contributions to
quality of life,
E Week promotes recognition among parents, teachers, and
students of the importance of a technical education and a high level of math, science,
and technology literacy, and motivates youth, to pursue engineering careers in
order to provide a diverse and vigorous engineering workforce. Each year,
Contact your
local
TSPE Chapter for other e week activities in
your area.
